I'm moving to Logan in a few weeks and did all my research in stats. I like the low cost of living, the change of scenery as well as the egalitarian nature of the Rockies region. That being said, I lived in Montgomery County, MD all my life before college (one of the most left-leaning areas in the nation), so I know I'll probably be in for a culture shock. Inputs on LDS and conservatives in particular would be appreciated.

I don't think its going to be a super cultural shock for you. Its a really pretty place and its a decent college town (reminds me a little of College Park or State College). Colleges usually are a great place to find diversity if you look for it.

I would caution you about being away from "it all" and the winters could be rough, even for Marylander. Good luck!

Thanks! I'm not worried about the cold and the snow at all. I might have to worry about the summer, though

Why the summer? Inversion?

I think nothing in your Maryland experience can prepare you for driving through the canyon between Logan and Brigham City in the snow/winter. But ppl do it, so it can be done.

Logan social life (like most LDS dominant places in this state) basically revolves around the LDS chuch. If you're mormon you'll be in heaven... otherwise you'll have to hook up with the periperhy.

I moved to Logan 4 years ago from DC (lived in Adams Morgan for 7 years - so needless to say it was a bit of culture shock moving to Logan). I have had my ups and downs here, but overall it has been a positive experience. Although I am now in my 30s so my taste for nightlife has changed since my days in DC so maybe I don't notice it so much.

If you love the outdoors and doing athletic activities, there will be plenty to do.

The hardest part for me is building up a social network of friends. that can happen anywhere, but in DC there were many many more single, young professionals (25-35) than there are here. Plus there are no happy hours here. Many people 20-25 are married. Not that you can't be friends with the married kids, but if you are not you are definitely in a different lifestyle pattern. although I guess this all goes back to what you like to do for entertainment.

Logan is a college town, but I can't say it reminds me of College Park or State College, PA. Logan is a bit sleepier than both towns and has less bars and other amenities similar to those two places.

Well, I'm certainly an outdoorsy person, so that's a good news. I'm sure I'll get used to the LDS soon enough.

I grew up in Logan before moving away for college. Its very pretty, cheap, and low-stress (big cities can make me anxious).

Its hugely LDS. There are 3 'bars', but they are podunky. Cool people are definitely around, but it might be hard at first to find them.

The hiking, biking, camping, etc is amazing. Its super accessible, and not very crowded.

The winters are unholy.

You will get used to anything sooner or later, even hanging from a rope ... and after a few minutes you do not complain any more ...

I know plenty of Mormon people (I am one of them) who do not give a hoot what your religious preferences are, as long as *You* do not become obnoxious.
What many people do not realise is that *The Church* admonishes their members to be tolerant of other people regardless of their whatever !!!

So be yourself, make friends and have a great time.
Most of all, keep a smile on your face, so people will always wonder what the heck you are up to ....

Thanks for all the helpful advices! I'm moving in tomorrow and I took a good look at the area. It's mostly as you said. Overall, I think I'll like it here.
