Hi, I just joined this forum so I can find some info about old ghost towns etc, in Utah, but I was looking through all the threads in order to get a bit of a "feel" for Utah.
I am planning a trip to the USA in Summer/Fall '08, with mountains and ghost towns a high priority! I've been on GoogleEarth for months, plotting routes and destinations and getting as much info on conditions etc as I can, but here's something I have never heard of previously....tumble weeds!
These are a problem????
Please - more info!!! I will be in New Mexico, Arizona and Utah, on the back roads a lot. What is the major hassle with the ubiquitous weed?

No ... the only problem would be the nusance of cleaning them out of your yard. I live in an area with lots of open fields around. They used to blow into my window wells in the basement. So I just cleaned them out every few months. Now I have steel grates and no more problem. Just the occassional one that blows against my fence. Further into the city you would never even see them.

Default Goat Heads There May Be A Different Name

That's what they call them in New Mexico and are worse than tumble weeds.
They infest your grass and grow like vines and have very sharp points that hurt you if you touch them and your pets will have many problems with them.

Tumble weeds are a nuisence (sp?) but goat heads are a real problem. They attach to your pets, and anything they come in contact with. They wiil cause sores on your skin and take over your grass.

I can't wait to get away from them.

Tumbleweed.s are not a big problem! Eagle Mountain has a great view, depending on what you want, they have areas with 5 acre lots, areas with 1 acre lots, small lots, and townhouses. I can ride my atv up the street and into the hills, or I can take my dogs for walks in the hills, I dont think there are many places like this anymore. I commute to the airport everyday, its usually 50 - 60 minutes in the morning and 45 minutes in the afternoon. I leave at about 6:30 in the morning.

AVOID EAGLE MOUNTAN IF:

- YOU DON'T LIKE TRAFFIC... unless you work at home, you'll most likely be commuting to Salt Lake or Provo. Plan on a 1 to 1.5 hour commute to downtown Salt Lake during rush hour. It's not as bad if you're commuting at other times, but there really is only one road going that way, and it will likely be a decade until traffic out there is really all worked out... the new freeway will help, but that's at least 5 years away. Traffic along the Wasatch front is really not too bad compared to many other big cities (LA, DC, SanFran, Chicago) but the Eagle Mountain to Downtown Salt Lake commute is about as bad a commute as you can have in Utah.

- YOU WANT BEAUTIFUL MOUNTAIN VIEWS... Eagle Mountain is located in a dusty valley west of Utah Lake (called Cedar Valley) which is about 7 miles wide and 10 miles long... there are some mountains around... but most of them are sagebrush-filled mountains that rise to about 8,000 or 9,000 feet high... there's really only one beautiful mountain peak in the Northwest Corner of the valley... and most of the Eagle Mountain homes are located in the South Western part of the valley... I could never figure out why they decided to develop the least attractive part of the valley first... but they did.

- YOU WANT SHOPPING CLOSE BY... Eagle Mountain is early in its development cycle and there really aren't ANY places to shop... even for groceries... at Eagle Mountain. Certainly there are places on the drive out... but nothing within about 5-7 miles of town...

- YOU DON'T LIKE MORMON'S OR YOUNG PEOPLE... The population of Eagle Mountain is very young and very Mormon. If you're looking for diversity and don't want to have a neighborhood filled with Mormons and lots of young kids... Eagle Mountain is certainly not for you.

CONSIDER EAGLE MOUNTAIN IF:

- YOU WANT A LOT OF HOME FOR YOUR MONEY... You're money will go along ways in Eagle Mountain. You can get yourself a brand new home for considerably less expensive that most other places along the Wasatch front. The same home in Salt Lake Valley would cost you at least $50,000 more. If you're just starting out and want a new home, Eagle Mountain may be the place for you.

- YOU HAVE KIDS... OR LIKE KIDS... There are plenty of young families out in Eagle Mountain. No shortage of kids. If you have a small family and you're looking for a place where you'll be around other families in a similar socio-economic situation... Eagle Mountain may be for you.

- YOU DON'T LIKE MUCH SNOW... Eagle Mountain tends to get less snow than most other areas along the Wasatch Front. Don't get me wrong... it'll still be cold... it'll certainly be windy... and you'll still get some white stuff... but nothing like you'd get on the East Salt Lake Bench.

- YOU LIKE TO SKY DIVE... I have a good friend who sky dives at the Cedar Valley Drop Zone... if you're into that... Eagle Mountain puts you right there!
