We were looking forward to taking a trip up to the Provo area next week and possibly moving up there from Las Vegas. That was until another forum participant warned me (thank you) about a larger number of mosquitoes by Utah Lake. Then I started looking more into the mosquitoes and see that they are an ongoing problem. Coming from Las Vegas where we have next to no mosquitoes, moving to a place that has them would be a downgrade. Utah is a beautiful state and I'd hate to rule out the whole state because of mosquito problems in a few areas. So my question is what parts of Utah are free from mosquitoes?

Just stay away from standing water - and the lakes....and you'll be fine.

Utah lake is quite far from the Provo-Orem foothills....

Thanks, are you saying that there's no mosquitoes in the Provo Orem foothills? What about the area between Salk Lake and Utah Lake like Draper, Riverton, South Jordan?

I really don't think this is something you need to worry about. I have gotten exactly one mosquito bite in the past year, and it happened in my car.

nyllie, what city do you live in? It does seem to be a problem in Utah; I even came across current news videos about the mosquitoes....

I know it was me who warned you about the mosquitos near Utah lake, and near the canals and such. It's only a problem if you are outside after dark. When I went for a walk near the lake in Saratoga springs, I got eaten alive on my legs one summer. I had a friend who lived pretty close to the lake in west Orem, and I got some mosquito bites in his back yard. You aren't going to find any area that is totally mosquito free. There are just more if you live near a river or lake. I've gotten a mosquito bite or two sitting on my deck in Draper, and we don't live super close to any water. It does happen. But really you only have to worry a lot about them being more prevalent in July and early August when the nights are warmer. They aren't a problem any other time of the year. There are a lot less mosquitos here, than in California where I grew up. Honestly, don't let them affect your housing search, or your decision to move here. Utah is still a very dry state climate. I get about 1-2 bites a year, and that is spending a lot of time out doors. We don't live by a lake, but still, it's nothing to worry about.

Thank you for the clarification on the mosquito issue, a couple of bites isn't bad at all. I was under the impression that you guys were inundated with them. Just out of curiosity, where in California did you live? I lived in Irvine for 12 years and never saw any mosquitoes, roaches or such the whole time I was there...

Really, and there were mosquitoes huh? Wow.. The weather and the lack of any bugs were the two things I liked about living in Southern Calif. But now having lived in Las Vegas, I enjoy the dryness, as well as the mountains and hiking and I'm sure Utah is even better!

Funny reading about mosquito concerns in Utah. You want squito probs, go to places like the Midwest, FL or the NE. Compared to them Utah has no problems (w/ mosquitoes).
