Just wanted to make a poll for curiosity sake. Where do we all come from? There's no scientific basis for this, so just answer what you feel most accurately represents where you come from. If you were born in Georgia but moved to Utah when you were 2 and have lived here since you can answer the South or Utah, whichever you feel more like defines where you are from. Try to pick the region that best fits your home. If you're from Houston and feel like Texas is more "south" than "plains" pick south. There may be some ambiguity in this, but it should be interesting when we get enough answers.

I moved to Utah when I was 6, but will answer West Coast because I was born in LA, to a family who'd lived there for generations, and feel that better defines my roots.

Options:

Utah: Utah
West Coast: States on the Pacific Ocean
West: States east of the west coast states, but west of the plains states and not Utah.
Plains: Texas, North Dakota, everything between.
Midwest: Minnesota, Missouri, Ohio, Michigan & everything between
South: Louisiana to Florida, up to Kentucky & West Virginia.
Northeast: Pennsylvania, Maryland, north and east.
Mexico
Canada
Central/South America
Eurasia (let's say west of and including any of the "-stans" and the middle east
Africa
East Asia
Oceania/Pacific

Oh, and this should be obvious, but please only answer if you are currently a Utahan or are seriously considering moving here within the next month or two.

I am not really from anywhere as I am an Air Force brat. However, before moving to UT, I lived in NJ for 9 years, thus picking northeast. We have lived in UT since 1994 though and have raised our kids here, so it was a toss up between UT and the northeast.

Using the prevalent situation, I dare to say: I could be from Heaven ... ?

Some here in Utah, if they are Orange, then from Asia - Borneo !

Grew up in Chicago, moved here at 25 for 3 years, then moved back to Chicago for 3 years, then off to the San Francisco Bay Area for 10 years. Came back here in 1993 and been here ever since. Initially rented in the E. Millcreek/Holladay area, then built a home in 2003 in Herriman. I rather miss the Holladay area frankly. Wish I could have afforded a newer home there but that's not the size of my bank account

So what if someone is from Denmark, Germany, Portugal or Russia?
You should at least add west and east Europe.
You even have Mexico and Canada in your list...

Lots of Americans are from Mexico and lots of Americans are from Canada. Makes sense, you can drive to both. Not a statistically significant percentage of them grew up in Denmark.

Denmark, Germany, Portugal and Russia are all part of "Eurasia" which I realize has vast cultural differences, but when we're talking about dumbing down the whole world into 10ish categories of where Utahans grew up, Portugal and Russia are fairly close.

Well that does not make any sense at all. People are so different that you can't just put them in one pot. You wouldn't put "America" only regardless if you come from Mexico, Canada or Chile.

I know at least 5 people that come from Denmark that live in Utah. And it would be very interesting to see where anyone else comes from.

I feel like you're just nitpicking something completely pointless, for the sake of debating. No thanks.

I feel like debating with someone like you would be pointless anyway.

I must admit I find the survey a bit lopsided for respondents that come from outside of the US, Canada and Mexico. The continents of Europe and Asia could not find a room for a distinct entry and had to be lumped into a single entry of Eurasia, though East Asia somehow made it. So, I guess the curiosity has rather narrow limits.

Eurasia choice is ambiguous and "let's say west of and including any of the "-stans" and the middle east" further muddies the waters. If it is to mean Europe and Asia - that extends to the Eastern most parts of Russia and up to the Pacific ocean - including China and Vietnam, and so on - making the choice to include East Asia a bit curious.

From the thread so far, it appears that the OP is not particularly keen for debate on whether the categories are valid. So, I will try not to respond more than once, but wanted to raise the point to highlight the contrast in geographical granularity embedded in the choice of categories.
