Hi, is Utah strict on long term camping in Dixie wilderness, I love Utah and want to work part time
as well as camp long term in wilderness. I know there are black bears I am also wondering about
brown bears? Thank you for any insight

If you're talking about BLM lands - you're pretty much O.K. as supervision is lax and you really have to be over the line to gain interest from authorities.

Primarily, the feds are concerned about those damaging the land and leaving trash behind. I often camp on BLM land and simply observe the "leave nothing behind but footprints" as well as the Tread Lightly philosophy. In over 40 years of being out there in the deserts of Utah and Nevada - I've never been approached or questioned by a Ranger. Seriously, not once.

Bears? Not in the desert areas. Bears and trees go together. If you're in an area with forests/trees, it's always possible bears are around. But, most of Dixie is not forested. The exception is the Dixie National Forest.

There are NO brown bears in Utah. Black bears are plentiful, and in some areas (such as around Moab), they will come down the mountains in the winter if it is a harsh winter and they get hungry. But they are small down here; although quite plentiful in the Lasals. Your biggest threat in many areas of Utah is the mountain lion.

We've got those 3 young ones at the Hogle Zoo..

But yeah, mountain lions and rattlesnakes are pretty much the only thing that'll mess you up in the Utah wilderness. Maybe certain insects if you have a bad reaction to them. Oh and hunters. Lots and lots of those guys..
