I am looking at moving to the Vancouver area in about 6 - 8 months. Mixed couple, I grew up in Jamaica and my wife grew up in Germany, one 15 year old daughter. We will be moving from San Jose, CA. I am looking to transfer within the company that I currently work for here to their location in Portland. We are looking for a home outside of town for preferably below $300,000 with a couple acres. I am handy and wouldn't mind a place that needs a little work. We like gardening and would love to have a few chickens. I am looking for at least 3 bedrooms and least two baths. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. We have lived in Oregon before on the central coast so we are not totally new to the area. I should add that my job requires some amount of traveling and that I will be working both sides of the river in WA and in OR.
Thanks in advance....

with a 15 yr old daughter, I would get close to Clark College (east Campus (next to 192nd Ave Walmart) may do for most classes). Great 'small' neighborhoods nearby on Bybee Rd, or Jackson Loop or next to LaCamas Swim & Sport.

Few semi rural places too, within 5-10 minutes.
Most 'fixers' will be near Fern Prairie. (all of above are 'Camas - westside) Great resale values due to schools.

My Clark College mention was for (RS) http://www.clark.edu/academics/programs/running_start/

An excellent program that served many well (Free college instead of HS). I have a Camas friend who's 3rd daughter just started RS. 2 others did 1/2 RS and 1/2 HS. This one is 100% RS (as did mine, except for also doing HS sports (and jobs)). One of my bosses did RS in the 80's. Just right for some, not all. I would not subject a 15 yr old girl to a NEW public school, but I seriously doubt Camas or Union High (next to Camas) would be a problem. RS avoids the social issues and offers a superb edu and head start for delivering excellent college work and study habits. (self directed efforts (college) rather than HS where they TELL you what to do and you just follow instructions)

Cascade Park area will do as well (schools / resale not as good).
Avoid Orchards. Many rentals, but some nice areas.
Downtown Vancouver near Clark College or South of Millplain in 'the-heights' can be nice. BUT downtown housing prices are wildly high. (fixer mania, everyone is doing it and making BIG $$), If that is a plan... get a place near Officers Row or Deaf School (Walk to Clark College main campus).

East Vancouver gets you close to I-205 and just a few minutes to PDX (where I fly to SUN frequently). $19. OW direct to San Diego when Hobo (spirit) has a sale (with an excellent schedule... down at 6 AM home by midnight... cheaper RT than a hotel).
$89 OW to most other CA destinations on SWA (can exchange for free if your schedule changes)
