Is it doable? How much time does it take on an average in the morning and in the evening? What are some of the experiences? Thanks in advance..

working day shift ~ 1 hr on a good day, usually 1.5 (each way)

working 'off-shift' ~ 40 minutes each way -

Take the shift differential (higher pay, no bosses) and spend more time with the family, and less risk of spending time in the hospital (accident) It is not uncommon to get 'rear-ended' these days with cell phones and SUVs (poor reaction + poor braking in 200days of wet pavement)

Another option is to work weekends (3-12's) or telecommute

Thank you Janb for your reply. Is there any advantage in by passing 205/5 and taking lesser traveled highways like 30?

no advantage... stoplights + bus traffic.

There are lots of folks that do this commute, so it must be reasonable for them

I just don't do 'stoplights' or sitting in traffic (prairie kid)

It is too bad that MAX doesn't have a downtown Portland 'bypass/ underground' so you could get on in Gateway or Ikea (east Portland) and ride to Hillsboro. The I-84 and Hwy 26 lines are pretty fast. (I'm not too keen on surface level mass transit either after living in Singapore and BC. both with elevated / tunneled FAST and SAFE service) MAX has a bad habit of running over people, cars, wheelchairs, and fire engines.

Hillsboro is a bit of a drive, but definitely doable. (This, coming from someone who used to drive from east of Washougal to Oregon City, OR everyday.) And I second janb's idea of trying to get off-peak shifts. You'll save a ton of time and aggravation with the shorter commute.
