Hi All,
Wasn't sure where to put this, didn't see a Canada forum.

Was watching vids on "Vancouver, WA" the one near Portland... and hit this vid, apparently about Vancouver, Canada.

Seems there's a huge Chinese population there? Is there high tech up there or similar? Wondering why there are so many asians up there. Were it in the USA, might be inclined to move there since upscale asian populated areas are generally safe places to live. Anyone know if the USA side is similar?

There aren't many Chinese on the US side of greater Vancouver metro. I think many live in Canada because the prior visa requirements were very easy for Chinese wanting to leave China to store wealth in a more sound economy. There are some here but not exactly "high tech", I think those live near Seattle and Silicon Valley.

Canada used to have a law that allowed foreigners to live long term in Canada by buying a high value home or investment. Vancouver was the preferred location for Chinese because of its beauty, climate, and easiest location to get back to Asia. Vancouver recently imposed a tax on foreigners buying homes there and the influx has stagnated.

A few years back, we took a trip to Vancouver and it felt similar to the time I worked in Shanghai.

Seattle has a significant Asian population but still far less than Vancouver.

Vancouver, as a fairly internationalized port city, has long been a draw for immigrants from around the Pacific Rim. One big milestone comes from 1997, however. That was the year that Britain handed over control of Hong Kong to China. Many families moved to the Vancouver area in the years leading up to this event--which set the stage for ongoing immigration in subsequent years, not just from Hong Kong but from mainland China as well. The newish Aberdeen Mall shown in your video is a fun place to check out. The food court in particular is a must visit.

Vancouver, WA (and Portland OR) are very 'Asia friendly / accepting' if that is what you are getting at. (according to your other posts)

There is some Asian gang activity in east Portland, so if headed there, check with law enforcement for your particular questions.

For Vancouver BC info,,, head to that forum. (6 hrs away from Vancouver, WA, so we only get to BC 2-4x / yr)

Vancouver has a huge Asian population. Per the 2016 census, the Asian and European populations in Metro Vancouver are split nearly evenly.

The largest Asian nationalities in the region are Chinese (~20%) and Indian (~12%). For Europeans, it's English (~20%) and Scottish (~14%).

I don't think you'll find any US city with similar demographics.

Irvine, CA has a population of ~230k of which 48% are white and 41% are Asian. Of those, 29% are Chinese, 20% Korean, 16% Indian, 10% Vietnamese.

Good find though that's a fairly small city within Los Angeles. My statement was more referring to a city of comparable size; Greater Vancouver has a population of roughly 2.5 million.

Irvine is part of the Los Angeles metro area, but it's actually in Orange County. Orange County has a little over 3 million people, and over 600,000 of them are Asian. There are also over 1 million Hispanics in the county, so you're right, you can't really say it's demographically similar to Vancouver, but it is certainly an extremely diverse* area with a lot of Asians.

*unless you are one of those peculiar people to whom "diverse" means specifically "a large black population."
