I've found that in Chinese 'fast takeout' places, that if you request say Mongolian Beef without the beef they will do it. It is worth it to ask -- all they can say is 'no'.
I dont eat any red meats....the meats I ate were fish and chicken. Why would I want a veggie burger fried on the same surface as regular meat if I'm trying to be a vegetarian?
As far as I was told years and years ago when the veggie patty first came out at BK, they did not cook it in the same space or grease as the other burgers, don't know about now...
BUT, if you as a vegetarian are out eating fast food...expect for a chicken tender piece or whatever to be in your fries and traces of whatever to be on your food...I mean, you get what you pay for...
Not to sound like a brat, but I very rarely eat out because of time constraints or being otherwise busy.
Hubby and I consider it a "waste of money", we would rather go to a nice 3 hour long Sat. night dinner where a chef can accommodate than spend here and there out.
It is like going to the bathroom before you leave the house - you prepare, go beforehand...
On the other hand, I would not want vegetarians to seem otherwise unflexible. Yes, there are "fast" options, but, you get what you pay for...

Be very careful, some of those sauce bases are beef based - found that out at pei wei with a gift card!!!
If I am traveling I most often go for veggie burritos, indian food or thai veggie food. Also it is easy to get falafel pitas/sandwiches now. If I have to eat at a chain, I would chose a veggie sub at Subway...not very filling unless you can get the veggie pattie, which not all stores carry anymore. Another good choice is Chipotle, they have some very good veggie burritos and "veggie bowls", like a burrito but no tortilla.

I tend to avoid restaurants, unless they specifically advertise themselves as "vegetarian." It's just too easy for lard to sneak into the burrito's refried beans, or chicken broth to end up in the Chinese noodles. When on the road, I usually look for a Subway, knowing that I can get a veggie sub.
Veggie sushi, at restaurants and at supermarkets is pretty good as well.
Oh yes, I had forgotten about supermarkets. When traveling, I'll stop by one and buy a salad if they have a decent salad bar or a frozen meal. The frozen meal may not be optimal, but it's the same, if not better than some of the stuff you get at the chains.
Out of the "mexican" type food chains I have been to, I like Chipotle the best, their guac is great and their black beans are vegan, I get those in my burritos. I always prefer to go to veg restaurants, but if there aren't any, I head for these places. Salad bars can be good and Whole Foods has some really good food in their deli, lots of it vegetarian, some vegan. I also check out small health food stores, many offer some type of prepared food, even if it is only a sandwich with veggies, sprouts and hummus, or a tempeh burger etc. It has gotten MUCH easier to eat veg on the road, compared to just 10 years ago.
