A 3/2 in this price range is going to be in a so-so area, I'd look in Camarillo and Ventura, Oxnard is not particularly nice (some areas of it are rather bad).

Anyhow, you have tried craigslist?

I remember when I first moved to Ventura from out of state finding a rental was hard. I used craigslist, apartment books, and the newspaper. In other states I used realtor.com and then worked with a realtor. Anyhow I actually found my apartment getting lost going to view another place. So driving around the area you may see rental signs or communities that are not listed. GPS was so good to have in CA for me. Even using it I get lost but without it I can't even imagine.

I think the neighborhood drive around is right for some areas. I have a rental in downtown Ventura that a simple sign in the window works. In more suburban areas, I find Craigslist works best.

I would also suggest Craigslist as a starting point. Try Zillow.com for properties for sale.

I've worked with a couple of good realtors that specialize in Oxnard/Port Hueneme, that will be able to provide leads near the base:

Mark 805-4864536 Royal Coast Prop.
Kiran 805-758-4488 Surfside Anacapa Realty

Or maybe a property management company that can give me listings for all over ventura county! I have looke in Oxnard, Ventura, Simi Valley, Moorpark, Thousand Oaks, all over really...

We are looking for a 3BR/2B in the price range of $1400 - 1700 a month in rent, we want to rent until we get to know the area and can find a home to buy in about a year. Any information will be extremely helpful.

Thank you so much for all your insight! As you probably notice I haven't been able to respond to any messages... That's because We're HERE! Ahh it was a rough week of traveling and moving and so on. We have actually relocated to the Thousand Oaks area. Today is hubby's first day of work and my daughter's first day of school. We choose this area bc of the schools. We are in an apartment at Archstone Thousand Oak Crest! It's small and my child are sharing a room, but it is right by her school and a big mall. It's is only temporary until we can find a home to buy! We so far love it and are only 2 hours from my husbands parents in Riverside. So again thank you to all of you who have given good information!
Congrats. T.O. was a great choice, The mall has expanded with a really nice outdoor shopping area. Plenty of parks and the best part is the ocean is a short drive away.
