Dole, based in Westlake Village California is considering moving the shipping side of the business from San Diego to Port Hueneme. This kind of business would be welcome at the Port of Hueneme and they are allready set up to handle the business. The Port of Hueneme is the busiest banana importing port in the United States.

These aren't the sort of jobs people typically move for, but it would increase local employment a bit. Given the currently high unemployment rate in Oxnard that would be preferable in the first place.

Funny how the unemployment rate in the Oxnard Metro area which includes Thousand Oaks is less than the state unemployment rate.

Why is that funny? I'm talking about the unemployment rate in Oxnard, not the entire metro area.

In this economy, I doubt an unemployed person would be standing around refusing a job that is willing to pay them more that the $0/hr that person might be making. I am sure the jobs might be more of that of a skilled laborer i.e. forklift driver, warehouse worker, packer or whatever. I suspect if they are moving the headquarters operations then there would be some administrative type of jobs and some mid managerial. I don't know...I know nothing of the fruit industry.

I have seen differing accounts of what the unemployment rate is. This could be because some use the Oxnard Metro figures, some use Western Ventura County figures and others use the figures of the city. Based on that I have found numbers as low as 7% unemployment rate to 15% unemployment rate. The article that I listed had an unemployment rate of over 10% for the metro area, much lower than the LA area. Still I am wondering if the numbers include legal citizens as well as illegal citizens. The population of Oxnard is pegged at over 200,000. Some have said that the total population numbers include illegal immigrants. We recently let all of our employees go that could not prove that they had the right to work in the United States. They are unemployed as of now, but then they are also here illegally. Many other companies have done the same thing recently. When you factor in that Oxnard does have a lot of illegal immigrants the numbers may increase if you take those into account. Our son has a class mate that is a citizen while her parents are not. They do not work a traditional job. He washes cars and she cleans homes. They do this without paying taxes.

I, too, thought Dole had a pretty big presence in Oxnard and at the Port of Hueneme, for many years. Maybe looking to consolidate operations? Also saw in the paper the other day that VW is moving their engineering from Westlake Village to Oxnard. Forget how many jobs that adds to the city.

ETA: here's a link before user_id starts lecturing about, goawd only knows what: Volkswagen unit moving from Westlake Village to Oxnard.
