I have visited SB a few times in last couple years. Very nice place but not familiar with current job market for network engineers (if any). Any inputs would be helpful. I'm from the DC metro area and looking for new setting. Thanks all.

You are using Indeed, Careerbuilder, Monster, etc, right?
Are you seeing a lot of openings?

Try Irvine.

Yeah I checked those sites, few opportunities. Saw housing costs, not sure how the service people make it there .

They live elsewhere and commute, live with parents or double/triple up in tight quarters.

Few people come to Santa Barbara to "make it" - they've typically already "made it" or came from UCSB and decide they don't want to leave.

Many of the folks who live in Ventura, Ojai, Lompoc and elsewhere commute to Santa Barbara where there are precious few jobs.

Charles is correct - Irvine will have more jobs in absolute terms. But don't expect to find much housing cost relief there, either. Depending on your budget, you're looking at a similar commute and inland housing.

We personally prefer the coast north of Malibu to the alternative. You can live much closer to the ocean for much less. It's also less crowded here. Main downside is finding work.

On a positive note, unemployment for skilled IT professions is about 4% in these parts. If you have experience, a degree and a certification or two, you're golden. Consider widening your search to include Ventura County and I'd bet you'll find something.

Good luck.

It's like shooting yourself in the foot to leave the hottest job market in the US for pretty much anywhere else, let alone CA.

yeah I know....just something going through my mind. Maybe when things get better I'll consider it more seriously. I got friends and family in CA doing IT and they say SF area is in much better shape. Guess the grass is greener on the other side until you get to the other side
