The California condor was driven to the brink of extinction to the point where in the 1980s there were only about 20 of them left. They were captured for captive breeding, and today they are a success story, however there are still only 400 or so alive today, and only about 200 in the wild.

the mountains of North Ventura county it seems is one of the best areas to see them in the wild. There is the Sespe condor refuge north or Piru.

Does anyone know anyone who has ever seen one in the wild??

I know most of you are not birdwatchers, or even go into the backcountry of Los Padres national forest, but I would love to see one in the wild.

Anything you can add?

One of my coworkers who lives in Santa Paula hikes on a weekly basis all over the back country and has spotted them on hikes. Let me see if he has ever taken pictures of them and if he has I will see if I can post them.
