Hi,
I need help relocating to Vermont from north Florida. I have always wanted to live there and now I have the opportunity to "just do it". What I need to know is: what are the rents like, how much would I need to move in and how fertile is the job market? I have pets. Are they accepted there? I have very little money and no job but I'm determined and will be there soon. I may have to live in my car for a while, but I don't care. I will need a job, friends and a church family. Can you help me?

check the newspapers for the towns you are considering and look at the help wanted ads. Also, you can look at the Vermont Dept of Labor site for jobs listed. You might be able to get a job as a housemother at a home for domestic violence victims, unwed mothers, or other such places. Dept of Labor counselors could help located those. That would take care of you employment and housing needs, which would be much better than go without any plans and living in your car. not having an address to put on job applications and not having a place to shower can make job-hunting VERY difficult, not to mention tiring and depressing. good luck

It depends on the area of the state you want to live in. I rent property in a rural area of the state and am getting $1100 per month for a home. That is very competitively priced. An apt should be about half that in a rural setting. In Burlington it's a whole other ball game. Rent tends to be expensive and depending on the time of year, you are also competing with collage students. Many if not all the newspapers are on line now. Look at the classified ads for both housing and jobs before you even come up here. You don't want to be living out of your car, especially when it starts to get cold.

As for pets, you need to find out from a landloard what the rules are. Some will take pets with a pet deposit and others will say no way. Another reason to get a place to live before moving up.

The job market is tough right now in the Burlington area. There are jobs out there but they can be competitive. My stepson has been having a hard time getting an unskilled job for sometime now. It depends on what your field is. You may get lucky or you may be out of luck. Again, it's important to get a job before moving. You don't want to be homeless and jobless for an extended amount of time here.

I am living in Eden VT, just moved here and love it. I work in the town of Johnson for the Electric Coop and have made a lot of friends, especially from the church I started attending. They have been great, before my wife was out here and I was still living in the hotel I had invitations from different members all of the time to be invited for supper it was great. They invited me to their picnics, forth of July and have welcomed me into the church and community. They even helped me find a house. It is a beautiful little church sitting in a field with a beautiful hilly backdrop and actually has around 230 members of all ages, a great family atmosphere with around 45 -50 in kids church every week. I was amazed.

I drove through Eden Notch this evening, ab8mi. It's one of my favorite places. Nice to hear that things are going well for you. The stretch of Rte. 100 that runs from Troy to Hyde Park is such a pleasure to drive. And I drive it quite a bit.

I bought an old boat from a co-worker of yours recently, and have just about finished restoring it. If you See Mr. R0ss1gn0l, tell him that I said thanks again. He and his wife seem like very nice folks.

Square Peg, I will tell them just that. I love this area and the locals have been very nice to me. I love that drive between Smugglers and Stow through the Notch, it is so beautiful. My sister ice climbs there a lot in the winter.
