Th only other week maybe is Sept 19th and for 5 days. Do you think they will be changed enough by then? According to that tool (thx by the way) they won't be changed but I don't know how accurate that is.

The tool can be off of course, it depends on when the really cool weather starts.

If you come in mid-September you'll see the beginning, whereas if you come mid-to-late October you'll see the end. Personally I'd go for the beginning rather than the end, since at the start you have the change in color mixed with the summery green, at the end you have some colors mixed with dried-up brown. November is just plain drab.

When it comes time for the leaves to change color, radio stations actually report on it, which is the most accurate way to know how things stand.

Alternatively, check the lower part of this page:
Vermont Fall Foliage Reports
Along with comments sent in from various parts of the state, they basically say that if you don't like what you see, go up a mountain or down a valley to get a better chance at seeing some "colah."

Usually the peak is around October 12-15th in the middle of the state, a week earlier in the north. If you come the week of Sept 19th you won't hardly notice the color. You'll see a few trees with some early color but mostly they;ll be drowned out by the mass of green.

I would also recommend the 3rd week of October. Start in Vermont and end in Maine. It's hardly ideal, as pretty much all of the mountains will be past peak by then, but you'll still see a lot more color than you would in the middle of September.

Take route 302 which ends in the center of Portland. Spectacular scenic view on the way.
