There are a few definitions of "flatlander." Depending on who you ask, you'll get one that suits your purposes.
Kipling was a flatlander. He held disdain for the people and way of life and wallowed in his feelings. Bernie Sanders might be a flatlander by some definitions, but that hasn't prevented Vermonters from accepting him and repeatedly voting for him.

IMO, You stop being a flatlander when you accept and appreciate the common people for what they are, and stop calling yourself a flatlander.

I was thinking more like CT. I am after all a landlord in Vermont. It's in my best interest to know who to avoid renting to, especially when I've had the pleasure of having them move into one of my places and bring their friends.
