Hi folks, just wanted to hear from anyone who can give me any advice on how to deal with the Canadians at the border. I used to live in Burlington, VT and crossed into Canada on a regular basis to do shopping or visit Montreal. On those trips I would sometimes buy over-the-counter medicines that you can't get in the US and which I always declared on my return to the US. The thing is whenever I crossed I would always tell the Canadian border staff that I was visiting Montreal for the day even if I was only really going down the road to Cowansville to do some shopping..........It just seemed so much easier to say that and I was never questioned hard about it. This time I will be crossing on the other side of Vermont and I doubt I will get away with that excuse. At the end of the day, I just want to tell the truth that I am crossing to buy some over the counter medicine but I don't know if that would open up a whole new can of worms.

I'd just say you're going shopping. Period.

Have crossed on the other side of Vermont (91) many times and never had any problems with border/customs. Just be honest and don't elaborate unless they ask. Remember, you'll have to answer questions on the way back as well.

Your car is logged going in and coming out. They know how long you've been there, so it's best to just say you're shopping and leave it at that. Be honest and friendly and you'll do fine. You don't want them to have an excuse to tear your car apart. They did that to a friend years ago and after finding nothing, said, "have a good day" and left him to put his car back together.

We say we are going grocery shopping, which we are. Sometimes they ask what we intend to buy, and why not buy them in the US, and our reply is "better quality and cheaper", which is the honest answer. Never a problem.
