Virgin Mobile works fine for me in the Brattleboro area, and they're on Sprint's network. I do lose service when driving west on Route 9 towards Marlboro though. As suggested, a booster might be the way to go.

I'm happy with Virgin as they're pay-as-you-go, and have very affordable plans for smartphones that don't require paying for mobile data.

Get your son a signal box from whichever carrier he already has and/or get a magic jack if he has an internet router... At&T is pretty good in Northern Vt but I live 2 miles from the Canadian border and text messages don't get through instantly in my house, for sure!!!

Most places in the more rural parts of New England, your choice is between AT&T and Verizon. Depending on your location and travel pattern, one may be better than the other. For my locations and travel pattern, Verizon is superior.
