Moved to the lower Green Mountains a couple of months ago. So far I am very content. I love the peace and quiet, the fresh food, comparatively low cost of living (compared to Boston), and the culture.

People have been very kind to me here- I have great, supportive coworkers. But I haven't made any friends to hang out with when I'm not working.

It doesn't help that I'm almost always working...but I was wondering, in rural VT (not Burlington), how exactly do I make friends? Where do people go to meet other people?

Volunteering in the community is probably the best way...find a cause you believe in and enjoy and get on it - this is how I've made several good friends over the last two years. And then it just sort of seems to snowball from there - you go to events, meet other people and so on. Also, the longer you are in a town, you just start seeing the same people around and get to know them.

Now sure if Rutland has any Meetups, but that could be another option.

Ask your neighbor about his tractor. We love to talk tractors!

Ditto above! If you like sports see about volunteering to coach at a local school. Or find a local adult league or pick up game. Find a church to join if that is something of interest. Join the local Rotary/Lions/Elks Club.

Read the bulletin board at the library. $5 says that at any given time you will find at least three activities that you're already curious about or have been involved in elsewhere.
