Walkable town, not too far from Royalton? (Rutland, Montpelier: schools, pharmacy)

Any advice for a newcomer to Vermont, looking for a city or town to live in with all major amenities like supermarket/pharmacy/schools, all in walking distance, a few restaurants, maybe a Baptist or Pentecostal church, maybe some international folks, in easy driving distance to Royalton, even in winter? Can one actually live in Vermont and not have to drive everywhere? I hate driving, especially in snow, sleet, and ice. Thanks for any thoughts.
I could probably live in Hanover without driving except on occasions when appointments or scheduling made walking not feasible.
It's not that close to Royalton (about 40 minutes) but I live in Rutland and just about get by without driving, caving in only to carry heavy items, when I'm in a big hurry, or when I don't feel like facing the weather. I do know people in Rutland who do not drive. They seem to get by just fine.
Thanks for the quick replies, what a nice forum! Rutland looks like a nice town - how far from Royalton? And no one thinks Montpelier is a possibility?
Will you be commuting to South Royalton? If so, the commute from Montpelier can be rough in the winter. That stretch of I-89 is at a high elevation. The commute from Rutland to Royalton would be rough as well. You'll want to concentrate on the White River/Hanover/Lebanon area.
I drove Royalton to Rutland a lot, and it is not a fun ride in the winter. Pretty though.
I agree with VTER as far as Montpelier. My wife worked in Hanover when we lived in SoRo, and in the winter sometimes the drive was easy, but one night it took four hours, and often it would take an hour in bad weather.
Sounds scary, I don't relish sliding off the road. Yep, South Royalton. The consensus seems to be Hanover. Too bad, because Montpelier seems like a really nice town, and it's closer to an airport.
