Any bets on the dates of first frost this year?

Mt. Mansfield (first SNOW visible from Burlington)

Montpelier first frost

Waterbury first frost

Burlington first frost

If someone hits all four exactly, I have a Ralph Nading Hill book for them.

NWS Uses 36° as the "frost" criteria. It can happen with 37 but rare and sometimes it doesn't even happen with 34. But 36 makes frost possible so they use that.

With that said....

For Burlington: Using all data on record since 1892 (not just 30yr normal)

Normal First frost: September 25th
Earliest: August 31, 1976
Latest: October 22, 1905

Here's a look at the last 15yrs

It would of been so patchy that unless someone physically saw it on the ground or roof nobody will know where it happened. I am pretty sure someone in some neighborhood saw some where upper 30s happened. But since it was so scattered, we'll have to wait for the next one to see.

Here's a graphic from NWS Burlington for yesterday

Cool! It'll be interesting to see when the other locations get theirs.

No doubt this weekend it's happening, more widespread.

Its only about 41 right now though.

I did break down and have a little kindling fire this morning.

There was frost more than once only a quarter mile down the road from my land the past couple weeks but not at my place which is a bit higher in elevation. The frost hit the lower lying areas. My watermelon plants still limp along but I doubt I'll get ripe melons this year.
