I have been reading some of the postings and I have to say.....Yes, rent is expensive, yes......there is crime in our bigger cities, i.e. Burlington and Brattleboro, and no......pay scales are not adequate. It is hard to live here. I live in a rural town, you blink twice and you are in and out, but I know my neighbors, both immediate and down the road. We watch out for each other without knowing what is going on in each others homes. The crime in my town is virtually non-existent and we stand together as a community. We grumble a little about out-of-staters, but welcome them with open arms and a warm smile all the same. It isn't easy street here, but last I knew, it wasn't easy street anywhere else either. I went to Vegas once and if given a choice of their crime or our Burlington's crime, I will stay right to home. If you can handle Noreastern snowstorms than that is probably the roughest you go through. It is hard to afford expensive things, but a great way to learn to be frugal. I enjoy VT and plan on staying for a long time.

Well put wperryvt...there are many, many of us here who are happy here and live comfortably.
Like anywhere else, you need to research research research before you move, especially to a rural area. Don't come with rose colored glasses or you'll be disappointed.

Theres a lot of country between VT and Vegas. Much of the upper Midwest resembles socially the VT of 50 years ago(I was there)with as little crime,a greater sense of community, far better public higher ed and a considerably lower cost
of living.Flatter though.

For what it's worth, Brattleboro is a town, not a city. It is a major town and a regional hub, but it is just a town. It is run by a town manager, not a mayor. It is a small town of approximately 12,000 people.

But the population, a resident told me, swells to about 50,000 during the workday.
