Hi all! I will be visiting the NEK for about 2 weeks in December/January and need help packing. I am from the south and have never experienced VT-cold... What are the most important items I need to purchase/borrow? Can anyone reccomend websites to order online from? I don't want to spend a ton of money but I also don't want to come up there and freeze! I know I need long underwear, but what's better: wool or silk? And do I need lightweight, midweight? I am used to Christmas on the beach with flip-flops and shorts! Thanks!

Oh - and how do you still look cute with all of those layers on???

You will want a hat and gloves. A hat is essential.
Long underwear...maybe..do you plan on being outside a lot? The only time I wear long underwear is if I'll be out snowshoeing or skiing.
Some sort of warm jacket. If you don't have one, get yourself a nice fleece jacket and layer underneath it, though that might be enough (unless you get lucky and are here during our usual "January Thaw"). Or better yet, see if you can borrow a winter jacket from someone you may know.
Footwear - you want something "weather-proof".
For an idea...check out L.L. Bean - L.L.Bean Official Site: Free $10 Gift Card with Purchase of $50 or More Love the stuff but its probably more $$ than you want to spend. Check out the sale or outlet page. Also check out Sierra Trading Post (not sure of hte URL but you can find it via google I'm sure).

Good boots and layers.
Weird how it can be warm in January. On Dec. 31 we had a big storm (maybe it was on the 30th?)...we were outside playing in deep, deep snow in our yard in our fleeces...it was sunny and too hot for coats!!

No one answered the cute in layers question.

A cute hat, scarf and mittens which complement your jacket, some sweet boots with fur trim or pompom ties....you can look like a ski bunny and be utterly adorable

Yes - the cute part is very important! I am meeting BF's family for the first time on this trip! I was worried about looking like a fluffy snowman!

Don't worry too much about fashion. It's very laid back here. (yet another good thing about VT after short lines to vote!)

You'll be indoors -- don't worry about looking fluffy, you can still dress warm and attractively.

We will actually be spending some time outside... we are both very outdoorsy and plan to spend some time playing! We are also going to Quebec City for NYE. I am very excited for a carriage ride, but again, very concerned about freezing.

Can someone tell me which long underwear is warmer and/or more comfortable: wool or silk?

Thanks again...

Neither, IMO. Having tried several base layer fabrics, Capilene is far and away my first pick. Here are Capilene, Wool, and a new (to me at least) fabric called Biostretch from my favorite outdoor clothing company of all:

Patagonia - Merino Wool, Capilene Underwear and Biostretch Baselayers: For Running, Skiing, and Endurance Sports

I buy some of my only new (versus used) clothing from Patagonia. It's pricey for sure, but it takes a beating and still works great, and they stand behind their products forever. And they are tres stylish. :-)

As for whether you'll actually be outside, it depends on your choice and that of the people you'll be with. We go outdoors all year 'round almost (but not entirely) regardless of weather.
