If you move outside town limits, you will hear gun fire. Don't worry it is (A) Target practice (B) Hunting season (C) You didn't leave Chicago fast enough. Well you can worry about (C). I have a cousin with a Degree in Forensics. She is leaving VT, due to no work in that field there. Customer Service on the other hand has lots of opportunities there.

I would just use your common sense and insticts about moving to vermont or any other state with limited industry, and few cities in a very rural setting. Vermont is beautiful, but it would not be job mecca any more than rural Wyoming would be. If your backround would be in medical, your opportunities are much higher for employment, after that, one would need to research just what type employers are in that state and what your backround and education is in pertaining to these jobs. I think the kindest thing one can do for people on these forums because I am not always sure that reading them is good for everyone, I think actually some damage can be done to some that read them. The kindest thing to do is give both sides of a place the good and the bad, telling someone everything is wonderful that life is all well and good under a maple tree, might be nice, but it just isn't reality.

Default Vermont Does Suck!

I am a native Vermonter and although I love the beauty of the state, it really is very hard to live here. It's a good place to live as a stopping ground in order to be close enough to interesting places to visit from time to time (Boston, NYC, Maine, Canada, etc.), which is the only reason I'm still here, in addition to being close to my elderly parents.

The job situation is very bad unless you are a professional, and then there are limited opportunities and the pay is very bad in that respect, as well. The average teacher only starts out at around 15 - 20 thousand a year!

The people who have come here from other states with their big wads of cash to buy property have driven up land and house prices so that the average (especially native) Vermonters are unable to afford such luxuries. Then, they wonder why people seem so 'small minded' and unfriendly.

And, I noticed that no one has even mentioned CULTURE! Burlington has the most 'happening' scene around, and even that is limited. Other places in Vermont...especially the RUTLAND AREA are so devoid of culture that it's depressing. Even when groups get together, and to their credit -mostly made up of those people who have moved here from other states- to create something exciting for the area, people just can't afford the prices involved to go to shows or buy artwork or attend other events, so, these ideas falls through. It all seems so hopeless.

If you have a large amount of cash and/or an amazingly wonderful career that pays astronomically well, and you've bagged this job before arriving, as others have suggested, then, if you can stand the slow pace of watching the grass grow, then Vermont is the place for you!

The majority of people that I know that have moved here, as well as the majority of folks who have grown up here, can't stand the place and get the heck out as soon as they can!!

Not to be negative. Only realistic. Hope that helps!

I mentioned lack of culture in a few threads and got jumped
on for it. Its no big deal to someone who was born here
or has a lot of time in here and has gotten used to it but its the
third of three reasons why we are leaving after only 18 months.
If you come from a place that has stimulating things to do, and I
dont mean some crappy mall, I mean coffee shops, a reading room,
an art gallery, music, etc...you'll go nuts in Rutland.
Except for the WAL*MART the whole town closes up at 6:00 pm.
Our house sold on Monday and all we are waiting for is the bank
approval of buyer financing. When that happens I will be clicking my
heels like Fred Astaire !!! Even Jersey looks good after RotLand, and
thats saying something !!!!

Hey thanks you guys !!!
I thought I was Personna non Grata around here...
I wont stop posting because Ill need to whine about how
much I hate my new place and miss Vermont.....There will be
a whole 'nother round of "I shoulda never left" posts to come !!
We will be bicycling down though because they just reassessed the
houses in Proctor and I needed to sell the car to cover it. But, yeah,
Ill save you a bicycle.....
Really though....now that the time is here it is sort of bittersweet.
IT is expensive, sux culturely, and all that other boring stuff flatlanders
write, but looking out the window on days like today make one think
twice. It is a beautiful state. I rode my bicycle all over doing errands
this morning and drove my Wife to Burlington Airport later on and
was mezmerized by the beauty, as I always am ! Even though it
didnt work for me I still hope they dont do anything that will spoil
the beauty of this place. It would be a sin.

Kozmic---good luck!! Too bad it didnt work out for you. I'll admit, I'm not a fan of Rutland myself. Sounds like Burlington may have been more your speed (maybe ).
