Yup...and IBM announced they are hiring last week.

IBM Hiring More Workers - WCAX.COM Local Vermont News, Weather and Sports-

I know 3 couples that recently moved back to Vermont (grew up here, moved away after college, and are now coming back to raise their families) and at least one member of each couple either had a job lined up or got them shortly after arriving. Good jobs too.

Also..Nokian is moving their US headquarters to VT

I wonder if all this positive job news will help someone like GypsySoul? I hope she reads this thread, or has heard about the job fair. Oh, but it isn't in her part of Vermont, is it?

Hi!
This is good news but unless they get some jobs here in the Upper (Crust) Valley none of this means diddly for me.

I'm still pegging away. My son was ill for @3 weeks with a virus then pneumonia so that sort of curtailed job searching but I am back on the happy trail.

This is a nice post, though. There's always hope, maybe things will improve this autumn.

They had one of these last year and the press were calling it a success as thousands more than expected turned up to attend. I had to laugh I wouldn't call more people unable to find work a success.

Well, I saw today GE is looking to get rid of about 160 workers by offering early retirement...

well, one of the good things about living near a ski resort town (stowe) is you can usually find a part-time job this time of year as they get their winter staff in place. This will be the 8th year my dh has worked there (15-20 hours a week, November through early April) and it really helps with Christmas and home repairs we can't afford out of our regular salaries.

The pay isn't much (essentially minimum wage with a free family ski pass) but I find that these days every dollar helps, especially with a baby on the way and unpaid maternity leave looming for us.

The real truth with recent job openings is that they are primarily low wage, temporary positions, involve shift work, or or combination of all three. Yes, of course there are a few scant good jobs that come available which offer a decent wage and benefits, but the ratio of them to folks who are looking with qualifications is out of whack. There is an absolute glut of folks, well educated and experienced folks, who are having little to no luck at securing employment. At present it is not just a Vermont issue, but nationwide. It is nice to see media feel good stories concerning upticks in select employment, but the reality is that way more people are having a tough time than those blessed to land in the sunny berry patch. I honestly hope that things will turn out for the better, but the current situation is far from idealistic here in Vermont. It is also important to note that folks that had developed a financial cushion for downturns are increasingly losing that buffer as their "emergency reserve" funds are becoming depleted. I personally know way more folks who have exhausted savings than those who are living secure in their investments and current work situations.

From the link: "The company agreed to open a manufacturing plant in Milton in exchange for over $240,000 in state incentives."
VT can't afford to buy everyone a job. These never end well.
