My family is planning on moving to Burlington, VT next spring. We will be taking our first trip up at the end of June. We plan to visit the North Beach Park when we are in town to swim if the weather is good. But I had a few questions.
How are the Burlington Lake Beaches? Are they clean? Is the lake water safe? How many weeks (about) of the year is it warm enough for swimming?

Also where is the nearest Ocean Beach. I am guessing in Maine but what town? As we may take a side trip when we come to visit at the end of June.

Thanks for the info!
Angela

Clean is relative. In the early part of the summer, north beach is clean and cold. Later on it is warm and polluted.

Vermonters used to traditionally head for Old Orchard Beach in Maine.

What I mean by clean is if it ends up with lots of trash in the sand. Thats all.

How about Crescent Beach at the end of shore road in the North End? I spent just about every day there during the summer in the 70s when I was in elementary school and junior high. The North End was a perfect place to grow up, at least then.

I like the beaches at the state parks up in the islands. Grand Isle for one.
Another nice place to swim in the Burlington area is at Red Rocks Park in South Burlington.
Re: ocean...we go to Kennebunkport, ME. Most Vermonters head to somewhere on the Southern Maine Coast. Some also go to Cape Cod.

If you are going to be near North Beach be sure to bring the bikes so your family can experience the beautiful bike path!

I believe you'll find the beaches (as well as the roadsides, the sidewalks and so forth) surprisingly clean here in VT.

North Beach is nice, but it's not (by any stretch) my favorite beach.
I prefer Oakledge Park, Sand Bar State Park, Leddy Park and a few others I'm not sure have names. The State Parks folks mention above are great too. There's a beach I walk to, starting from The Intervale, which often seems deserted when I'm there. North Beach is nice, but it's seldom deserted.

The whole Burlington/South Burlington/Colchester lakeshore offers beaches and lake access of one sort or another.

The Colchester Causeway is an example of lake access which isn't really beach per se, but which I think is just thrilling. You can walk a mile INTO the lake on foot or on a bicycle and many times see only a handfull of others all day long.
