Default Propane prices

Anyone just get a recent delivery?

Just got a delivery 2/10/10 of propane at $2.899 gallon up from $ 2.559 for a delivery on 12/23/09. Called them and the usual "either pre buy or when you use more you get a better price" I'm around the Windsor VT area - Company Irving. Use approx 600 gallons per year along with a wood stove.

I'm in Windham County and just ordered propane a the shocking price of 3.59 a gallon. I was told it would only go down a little if I used more yet the small 100 lb tank we use for the propane stove was only $75 to fill at the local supplier, a much lower rate for only 25 gallons of gas, which would equate to 300 for 100 gallons delivered.( you must have a way to transport it upright or hire someone to help)
We have high efficient rinnai space heaters and pellet stoves as the main heat now. We used a wood furnace that's too old and inefficient the first year and wood is not inexpensive if you have to buy 10 cords but it is quite cozy.
The high cost of gas throws off the savings but we all need to stay warm. I think that gas needs to be regulated and fair prices set for all. It simply needs to be honest and I think that means someone needs to hold them accountable.
Back in Ct. we gave up our gas company, after gouging us, and bought the 100lb tanks and regulators at Lowes for our stove and dryer. It's annoying to go fill up but we save enough to be worth the bother.
We are interested in finding a supplier for good used larger tanks but even that seems difficult.
CVPS is our company as they put in the tank and ran the lines before we bought.
Can you switch companies RJ? $3.93 a gallon is an outrage!

Are most home heated with Propane in VT? I live in NY and plan to move to VT, the last oil fillup was $2.75 per gallon and a gallon of oil has more btus. Why is propane so high?

My guess was that many more use fuel oil than propane. According to this website:

Home Heating Fuels : Energy Co-op of Vermont (http://www.ecvt.net/vermont_heating_fuels.html - broken link)
"Vermonters heat their homes with heating oil (55%), natural gas (14%), propane (15%), wood (10%) and electricity (4%)."

There is more expense to storing and transporting propane than oil. Still, I'm not really sure why it's so much more expensive, it doesn't need to be as expensive as it is. Good reason to just get a woodstove and tell big oil to take a hike though...

what is the going rate now?

curious what it will cost us to heat a tiny 450 sq ft condo with very high ceilings with an old Rinani.

I would imagine we are going to end up using 1-2 gallon per day, but we are on the 2nd floor, sandwiched in between 2 units. Should be interesting.

Here's the link to the Vermont Fuel Price Report: VT Fuel Price Report : Vermont Department of Public Service

One obvious explanation for the high price for propane is that it is effectively shielded from competition yet there is no price regulation. At present propane is almost as expensive as electricity on a $/MMBtu basis, even though the unit prices are very close.

Wow you are right.

if 1 KWH= 12 cents and 3400 BTUs = .0035 cents per BTU
1 gallon of propane = 300 cents and 91000 BTUs = .0033 cents per BTU.

Let's say you use 200,000 Btus a day , we're talking $7 electric vs $6.60 gas

That is pretty crazy.... at that point you may be better off to heat with electric because it is cheaper to maintain and has no loss.
