My husband opened the door and a bat he had been watching landed on top of the door. We brought it inside and put it in a cage. He doesn't want to let it outside because he said it is not common for a bat to be flying around this time of year.
We are aware of the decline in bats because of some type of disease. Does anyone know of an organization that we can call to find out what we should do with it. We are afraid it might die if we let it go. Any advice would be appreciated.

That is odd this time of year.
I would say call your local Game Warden for help and advice.

Perhaps it got misplaced by a local structure falling down for example?
I don't know, just wondering myself.

Thank you for the quick responses. I went on a website about bats and it had two rehabilitators in VT so my husband called and spoke with one of them. She said they may come out this time of year for some water. We put him in a box with a towel (like the website suggested). When my husband put some water in there he lifted his head. The rehabilitator will be calling us back so we can make arrangements to meet her somewhere to give her the bat.

Glad you were able to find some help, I was going to do some further research but I see Sherylcatmom did that for ya.
I was also going to add *be careful...and yeah I was thinking it would need water somehow anyways.

Thanks Summerz. My husband spoke with the only bat rehabilator in VT and she will be calling back in a few days to make arrangements to get him. This morning he was near the water so he must have been thirsty. He seems to be comfortable. The rehabilator said we could feed him mealworms. Hopefully the snow will stop and the roads will be better then today. He's very tiny but he looks healthy. We used to have a lot of bats around our home but they declined terribly. We are lucky to see one or two during the summer. Thanks again for your concern and have a Happy New Year!!

Does the bat rehab lady live in the Bennington area? I dealt with her years ago and she was willing to drive to Williston to get a bat that wouldn't leave our porch when the temperature was getting down to the teens. Luckily the bat left. I think she has bats living in her home-behind glass.
