Can anyone give me some info on Derby? Thinking of buying a house there. Have an apartment in Quebec City and plan on dividing my time between the two. Picked Derby because it's on the Quebec Border. Also found what looks like a great house there consisting of about 2.7 acres with lake front. Any info would be appreciated.

Default Derby VT

Ummm, love reading all these posts as they are very informative and everyone is very helpful to those with questions. I have noticed that they all seem to cover only mid-Vermont and to the south. I was looking for info on Derby because I plan on spending part of the year in Quebec and wanted someplace in the states that was not too far away, currently live in NJ. The weather won't be a problem because Quebec City is cold, cold, cold and gets lots of snow in the winter and is rather dreary although the people are great. So still would like to get some info on Derby of St. Johnsbury area or at least an idea where to find info.

Sorry...don't know that much about Derby. I could tell you a bit about the St. Johnsbury/Lyndonville area though. What kind of information are you looking for?

Thanks vter. Checked out the Caledonian. I'm also checking out St. Jamesbury. I was just wondering what the area was like. Is it hilly, flat, etc. Plan on making a house hunting trip that way as soon as I put my house hear on the market. I can spend about 3 days there so right now plan of checking out the Derby, St. Jamesbury region. Will also try to visit Brattleboro although haven't found too many houses there in my price range; but it sounds like a nice diverse community to live in. Problem is I want some acreage.

I think the Northeast Kindgom is what you are looking for. The area around St. Johnsbury & Lyndon is very hilly. Lots of rolling hills with farms, pastures, etc. A few larger mountains here and there. Burke Mountain and Jay Peak are great ski areas. Lots of nice, clean lakes. Joe's Pond, Lake Willoughby, Crystal Lake, etc. St. Johnsbury is about 45 minutes to Derby Line. You can get a nice place with acerage at a good price (compared to the rest of the state) in this part of Vermont.

vter, thanks for your response. I have found quite a number of places on line in those areas with the prerequisite acreage. Looking forward to checking them out on my way back from Quebec in July. In the interim I will be checking out Brattleboro. Found a few places there in my price range with a few acres. Thanks again for your help.

Is Derby or Eden, Vermont a better choice? The bottom line is I am in the process of buying land in either community. The purpose of which will be to put up a cabin or "shed" to hang out. Not interested in hunting or fishing. Just a quiet place to think and write!
