I love seeing fireflies. Usually they are out in force the latter part in June and early July. I was sitting on my deck Tues evening when it was really hot and I was surprised to see a couple. I don't ever remember seeing them in May. There were only two and one very dim and after about 5 min it's light went amber and then out.

Anyone see any last week?

I saw about a dozen a couple nights ago.

The fireflies we have here in Vermont are very fast blinkers. When the yard is full of them, it reminds me of a baseball stadium when a record is about to be set and hundreds of flashbulbs go off. The firefly light only lasts for a fraction of a second.

In Illinois though, they stayed lit up for a full second or two. I'm sure they send different signals that effect how long they stay lit-up, but I never saw the quick flash in Illinois.

I was driving to Burlington from Colchester I this past Friday and unfortunately (for the fireflies) hit about a dozen fireflies on my windshield. I haven't seen any since that evening.

I saw a couple last night. One July 4th about 15 years I was set up to photograph the fireworks at Sugarbush and in from of a field that had pretty tall grass. It was like a firefly convention, hundreds danced across the field. It was amazing. They generally come from a wetland so I bet there was a wetland near the road you ran into that firefly hatch.

Once on the interstate in Idaho we were driving along and the same thing happened but it was butterflies. So many the road got slick and the windshield got so covered we had to pull over.

We have a field near us and there are sometimes hundreds of fireflies in it. It's almost magical, they look like little pixies. Usually happens on a very hot night. Seeing that is one of my wife's favorite things, we talked about it last night. It's like a disney movie.

I took a look outside this evening, but still none here. We usually get a good dose of them in June though and they are something to marvel at. Lightning bugs!
