When I awoke this morning the sky was a pale shade of brown. It was actually a pleasant day weather-wise but there was a thick haze in the air from the fires burning out of control several hundred miles to the north. It's happened before. In fact, it happens about this time of year almost annually in the boreal forests where the fires are left to just burn themselves out. Normally, the prevailing winds keep the smoke away from us, but not always. And today was one of those days.

When this has happened in the past I could usually smell the smoke. I guess that it was high enough in the air that I couldn't today. According to the weather predictions the winds were supposed to shift and the clear the air this afternoon, but that didn't happen here.

Just wondering - did anyone else notice the sky today?

Yeah, I hear it was pretty hazy. Kind of put a damper on Memorial day outdoor festivites.

Oohhh - how odd. When I walked out of our condo yesterday morning I thought I smelled smoke, but figured someone used their fireplace overnight since it was chilly. But it was very very hazy all morning, I just thought it was foggy/muggy. Wow. Good to know.

I smelled smoke but we have someone who burns stuff down the road so maybe we aren't haven't any effects of it this far south. Still, last night and today I have a really bad sore throat and so does my husband.

We got it in Providence yesterday. By afternoon the sky was very hazy. I had originally thought it was just people grilling, but it was everywhere. Then later on, it actually smelled like a campfire.

We spoke with a group of folks who came down from Canada in the AM and the stated that there were nine fires burning at the time out of control. It has been so dry on the east coast for a long enough period that lightning strikes started the fires.
