What's funny about this is that's exactly how they did the b/c with the 80gb model.

This I figured. They have the software. They can apply such software to all PS3's - maintaining full backwards compatibility with little to no cost. After all, what is a PS2 game but a specially encrypted DVD? Heck, they could even sell it so that only those who want it would have it.

Get rid of blu-ray and you can't even play PS3 games! With the blu-ray comes unimaginable heating issues. Hence the fan placements and availability of external cooling pads/fans. Now, overheating issues aren't as massive as what the 360 has, and my PS3 runs pretty cool for a PS3. However, when it is running something blu-ray... I could effectively heat a home with it. I can only imagine it melting the metal and plastic encasements if there were no fans.

Another thing that made the slimline different from the bulky PS2 was the inability to have a hard drive that worked with games like FFXI, from my experience. I'm sure people would have an absolute cow if they had to purchase an external hard drive for their PS3. Now, I do have an external drive that has been formatted to work with the PS3... but that's a different matter altogether.

Also, taking away the ability to read a standard CD - such is a PSX game would also remove the ability to read music CDs... which some may not mind, but it's not a great business decision as many non-gamers with the PS3 enjoy it's home theatre benefits. It also would not reduce the cost or the size of the PS3 in such a way that would be beneficial to spend the money on re-redesigning the machinery involved in construction.

Oh, and I personally like the bulk and design of the PS3.
Looks awesome when in the vertical position!

Everytime im in Seattle, the Columbia Center reminds of a PS3...
