I'm currently in school down in North Carolina pursuing a career in education. NC is dead last when it comes to teacher pay, so the plan is to leave the state. On the other hand, Virginia is one of the best when it comes to education. However, is it easy to find teaching jobs in Virginia? Although the pay is much nicer, is it a lot more expensive to reside in Virginia over North Carolina? It's just strange to travel an hour north and be in a state that is so much nicer regarding teacher pay, but I'm not surprised.

Also to clarify, I'm most likely going to start off teaching history in high school. Eventually, maybe rise up to becoming a professor.

I'd say it depends on the area. Some areas have more openings than others. Higher pay can be offset by higher COL.

My first choice would actually be a Richmond suburb, maybe an area like Henrico.

I can only speak for the sites I looked at when applying for jobs. Rural south side seems to pay around 36-38k and 38-41k with a master's. Richmond area starts around 40 or so. You can google individual school districts and their site should have a link for teacher pay. Click on their human resources tab if there is no link.

Virginia is more expensive, excluding southwest VA. I live in Lynchburg and most apartments are about $600 a month and up for one bedroom. At least that's close to the minimum you might pay to live in areas that are not sketchy. We have a nice historic area that you could rent a room for about $350-$400, from what I've seen online. I don't know if you could find prices like that for decent areas in Richmond or VA Beach and I highly doubt you could touch that in Northern VA. If you have a family prices obviously go up quite a bit for more rooms.

Thanks for the info! It's a little too early to think about prices since I'm still in school, but the Richmond area is probably my top choice. Northern VA would be nice, particularly outer suburbs further from DC, but I'd probably go for Richmond if it's cheaper. Haven't visited Norfolk/VA Beach enough to comment. I even thought about living in Durham or North Raleigh and commuting to a school in Virginia (possibly Clarksville, South Hill) but that commute might be a pain, and I really wouldn't mind moving up to Virginia in general. I would just prefer a suburban setting, but I can't be too picky.

Does anyone know the cost of living between Raleigh/Durham, Richmond, and Northern VA? I know VA is more expensive than NC, but would outer Northern VA suburbs like Manassas or Stafford be a bit more on par with Raleigh/Durham? Also, any info on Richmond suburbs? Thanks!

I would think the main difference would be housing costs. What type of housing would you need?

Manassas and Stafford are worth considering, but I would also look into Prince William County. I wouldn't write off Fairfax County just because of COL. Pure volume of hiring numbers should keep it on your list.

When comparing NoVA to NC, look at pay scales and benefits in addition to costs.
