It has easy access to the Piedmont Triad Intl Airport, great highway access, etc. With its high jobless rate it should be a candidate for a major manufacturer such as a automobile plant. Oh well, I guess manufacturing is not something America wants anymore, only low wage jobs.
I think one reason is that there's no interstate highway going through it which is what believe many companies desire. US 220 from Martinsville to Roanoke is horrible because of its roller coaster hills and blind curves. 220 from Martinsville to Greensboro is much better because it's more like an interstate, though it becomes a 2 lane road at the highway 68 junction.

Also, out-of-town travelers have a preference for interstates. GPS units and Google Maps are going to tell people to take interstates and not the old US highways like 220. For example, if I was driving from D.C. to Atlanta Google Maps would tell me to take I95 to I85 instead of taking US29 to I85. So Fredericksburg, Richmond, or South Hill will be getting my travel dollars versus Warrenton, Charlottesville, Lynchburg, or Danville.

I don't know anything about Martinsville neighborhoods, but I highly recommend having a job lined up unless you're already set. Hopefully someone can answer your questions better than me.
