From what I understand the alternative solution is a 40 cent per gallon gas tax..... I'm thinking I prefer this with a few modifications.

I don't understand your question tberg. How about rewriting it in a complete sentence?
By your logic the amount of fine is directly proportional to the level of safety a community should see in return. Why not take the argument to the extreme? How about we impose a $1,000,000 dollar fine for speeding. By your logic the roads should be infinitely safer then, correct? This bill has nothing to do with safety and all about **** poor management of the current public dollar.

Oh yes and if this wasn't enough the assembly has chosen to increase these taxes as well:

* 2 percent increase in the rental car tax
* 2 percent increase in the hotel/motel occupancy tax
* $10 increase in the vehicle safety inspection fee
* 1 percent initial vehicle registration fee (for new car purchases or those moving into the region)
* 5 percent sales tax on auto repairs
* $10 regional auto registration fee

In addition, the authority may choose to implement the following optional revenues:

* Annual commercial real estate fee of up to 25 cents per $100
* $10 local car registration fee
* Commercial/residential impact fee (amount to be determined)

Have fun with all your taxes here because as soon as I get orders, I am outta of this friggen place!

No, the solution is for all government entities to follow the rules and the constitution, to live within their means, to work FOR their employers--aka citizens and taxpayers--not treat them as if they are the King's subjects.

Corrupt and abusive government is corrupt and abusive government. This was NOT done for your own good, this is how tryranny gets imbedded.

Looking for a rollback, some recall petitions, maybe an impeachment or two.

BTW, did the legislature perchance exclude themselves and the guv'ner from these penalties? Just curious.

I was going to post this after having received an email about it the other day.

These fines do seem excessive and ridiculous to me.

Hey, I agree on how things should be. I'm just telling you the reality of the situation and what was tossed about as other ways of getting highway funds....

Well, I didnt' vote for Kaine and I never said that I knew everything about the new law. What I wrote was the jist of what I have seen written elsewhere. I've been trying to get a copy of the law to read, but every link I've found has a dead end as if it's been pulled. Everyone who's going over the top on this (including those planning on moving because of it), expect lawsuits as soon as anyone is hit with it. It cannot and will not stand once it gets into the judicial system if what has been posted is correct. There are about 10 different interpretations of this law that I have seen, so I'm still not convinced either way. There are more than two sides to every story and I hope to see the actual law posted somewhere so I'll know what it is.

BTW, some of you don't have to be rude, condescending and a know it all in your responses while telling us "some of us dont know what we're talking about".

Tberg has a problem with all laws from what I've seen. And from other threads, he has the problem because he has been pulled over for reckless driving.

It's still cheaper to live in VA than in MD if you want to talk taxes.

And as for "by my logic". By my logic, most people get into trouble because they break the law.

Your post has a fairly self righteous lean toward it in my opinion. Try not to cast stones at glass houses. If you don't believe this law will effect you only us "law breakers" then think again. You would have to use a turn signal every single time you make a turn as well as change lanes for example. If you do this every time without exception then more power to you. If you don't, then hop in the boat with rest and accept your $1000 fine for not using a turn signal every once in while.

the new stuff is for revenue. The tolls have been taken away, and the money has to come from somewhere... I agree, follow the rules, and worry not. I work in an area in Suffolk not far fr where I live that they have put it almost all 2 hour parking, and if i dont find a spot somewhere, I have to use the 2hr, then.,... if I get to busy at work to remember to move my car... 15 bucks. bam. Costs money to go to work....lol not gas money either

You know pardon me if I'm wrong but wasn't there a referndom a few years ago asking what to with our surplus?
Funny it seems to have vanished.

I'd rather have a small sales tax increase instead of these absurd fines which really are going to hurt those in the less than upper tax bracket.

I'd like to see this overturned, but from what the Washington Post stated it will take five years or longer.
