I would like to also recommend City of Salem, VA or Southwest Roanoke County as areas that may meet your family's needs (They are neighboring locations). Southwest and Salem have a slightly higher cost of living than say the city of Roanoke, but it's still quite affordable if you look around.

As far as schools are concerned in the Roanoke Valley, Southwest and Salem are the way to go for your child with ADHD. That's the best public education Roanoke Valley has to offer if you ask me. In SW or Salem you child will likely receive the best care and education while still being fairly close to or within Roanoke. I would, unfortunately, avoid the Roanoke city due to the many problems with education and, specifically, special education that has been linked to that area.

I do not personally have children, but I have several friends in the area that do and they have said that they usually pay between 85 - 100 dollars per month in childcare for after school care if that gives you any indication of what the price of childcare may be in the area. Again, if you look around, you may be able to find something more affordable. Childcare, housing, and education are expensive no matter where you go these days, so I wish the the best of luck.

Hi Sarah, we just vacated a rental home just like you described in SW Roanoke County in the Green Valley School District. The home was on Melody Ave. The rent was a little higher $985 a month plus utilities. It's a very nice quiet neighborhood, friendly neighbors who walk in the evenings and come over and say hi, a park in walking distance (Garst Mill Park). Almost everyone has pets. THe rental company is called Progress Rush. Sorry I Don't know their phone number but you could find it in yahoo yellow pages. It may still be available since we just left (dh had a job change so we moved to TX) but if not maybe they could suggest another house! Good LUck.

Pam
