I have a promising job opportunity in Oakton, Virginia with my current employer. I have a family of four with two kids ages 6 and 14. I would like some affordable, family oriented, and diverse communities to live in with a reasonable commute to work. Particularly, I would be most interested in an area that has really good schools with nearby shopping. I would be renting and not purchasing at this time as I have to get used to the area before making that commitment (rental budget $1000 - $1800). Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated as I do not even know where to start with my search.

How far are you willing to commute? What type of home would you be looking to rent? I did a quick search and my guess is that 2bdr/3bdr apartments in Oakton will run in the upper end of the price range that you listed ($1700-2000).

Thanks for your input. I live in San Antonio, TX and my commutes to the office are typically in the 20-25 minute range. However, I would consider a longer commute in exchange for more affordable housing and above all good reputable school districts for my children.
