Officers can easily see bald tires when a car is stopped at a light or stop sign.

How in the world can you not know the tires have gone bald on a car?

Not a car person. Never been a car person. Never will be a car person. Key, gas pedal, go. That's really all I notice. I probably wouldn't notice if the hood was missing.

Yes, I suppose it is. I drove for about six months with this horrible rattling and shaking of my car, especially at high speeds. During this period, I PASSED the VA inspection. I took the car in for someone to diagnose and fix. I paid a grand (or so) for the litany of things they said was wrong. When I went to pick it up, the guy (casually) said, "hey, you may want to get some new tires...it wouldn't be cost effective to do it here."

So, I left the shop and the rattling was still there! (This was a 7 year old car with a lot of miles, so I thought that this is what I live with now.) So, I took it in for tires (I actually have a good tire place), and as soon as he pulled the car in the back he said:

"Wow - your car drives as rough as a dump truck. Bald tires, poor alignment, and irregular wear is doing that. You should have come in much sooner".

Yup, probably should have. But I had no idea that bad tires would do that to a car.

That being said, I diagnosed a bad transmission (which then took my repair shop 5 days to "replicate the issue and diagnose") early, and was able to trade it in for $$$ without anyone else knowing the transmission was shot.

So, I guess I am an automotive idiot savant. Or, maybe just an idiot......

I'd go with idi..., whoops, never mind. Maybe you should set a calendar up and every 6 months drop your car at a shop you trust to check things over. Might avoid some more expensive bills later on. But my wife is like you. If it weren't for me nothing would get done to her car.

Registering your car is reasonable (about $40) a year....but you have to pay property taxes on your vehicle.
