Those of you who think VA is a police state, only think so because of our traffic laws? Not because of any of our other laws, but our traffic laws?

Because that's all you guys are complaining about and using examples of - speeding tickets, reckless driving tickets, police patrolling our highways. I'm pretty certain it takes more than traffic laws to make a police state.

I'm getting ready to drive to Dulles to meet a group coming in from Jordan then I'm taking them to Front Royal. I certainly hope we survive driving these horrible police patrolled roads.

Nope, not a lot of cops in my opinion, but then I am coming from Texas where we had Sheriff's, City Police, City Marshals, Metro Policy, School district police, Constables (Unique to Texas) and little cities inside of Houston and Harris county (and true for all of Texas) have their own police forces and school police forces and such as jailers and bailiffs and so on.

All the colleges and universities have their own police force and the Texas Medical branches have their own police force...the airports have their own forces. The port authority...the fire department has arrest powers....and so on and so on.

In addition, all the below. Every one of these have state-wide warrantless arrest powers for any criminal offense (except certain traffic offenses) committed within their presence or view. They also may make arrests with a warrant anywhere in the state.

Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission
Texas Attorney General
Texas Commission on Law Enforcement
Texas Department of Criminal Justice
Texas Department of Insurance – Fraud Unit
Texas Department of Public Safety
Texas Highway Patrol
Texas Capitol Police
Texas State Police
Texas Ranger Division
Texas Parks and Wildlife Department
Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association Special Rangers

These are just state and county and city agencies. The list for Federal is even more.

So no, VA does not seem like a police-state in comparison. Not that Texas felt like one either....now New York and California with their "nanny state" politics is closer to a police state than Texas or VA....outlawing a 32oz Big Gulp...now that's a Police State.

I don't feel that Virginia is even close to a true police state, especially considering we have the freedom to speak against the Virginia government if we want.

However, I DO feel we're more of a Nanny state which is defined as "a government or its policies are overprotective or interfering unduly with personal choice."
