This is going to go with my post from a week or so ago for those who read it. Hy DH has a very specific way to put it.

Default where you teaching?

If you are teaching in the District, you have a lot of options, if in Northern Virginia-all the localities there are good. As for Maryland, avoid the Inner Beltway areas of Prince Georges County-they are not safe, outside the beltway try Bowie, Mitchelleville or Laurel. In Montgomery County, you could check out Silver Spring, Kensignton areas for close proximity. Depends on your salary.

Have you posted your question in the Northern Virginia section? I have a neighbor who is a first-year teacher in Alexandria and she lives in a 3-bedroom condo with 2 roomies here in McLean. I suspect teachers live in the farther-out communities.

It really depends on where you are going to be teaching. It's a huge metro region.
