looking to retire in virginia .we been to Bedford,forest,moneta.however we have not chech out the coast thinking of smithfield would like to be near a hospital, food stores, shopping mall. is any one place better for us to retire to?
We are thinking about renting ,before we buy, however my husband would rather buy a house and only move once. thank you

That's not much info. - how much land, what are you looking to spend, what kind of environment do you like, etc. - Virginia is a BIG state.

Agree there is not enough information. We looked at Smith Mountain Lake (Bedford and Moneta) for retirement, and realized they were too hilly, especially when there was snow in the winter.

We settled on coastal North Carolina partly because the terrain is flatter.

I am not sure I would enjoy Smithfield, but it has a cute downtown with historic houses. It might be OK if the OP has a smaller budget or has family nearby. There is no hospital in Smithfield, and one would have to go across the river to Newport-News. There is only strip shopping areas in Smithfield, so one has to go across the river to Newport-News for a mall.
