While the OP 's may be very happy in Lynchburg, I am not a fan of Liberty University. They are too quick to judge and severe on sex and identity issues. They seem to have a huge influence on the economy.

We looked around Smith Mountain Lake for a retirement place, and thought it wass too hilly and isolated. I could live in Roanoke or Salem, but not Lynchburg.

Booklegging huh? Is that way back in the day when we had a ban on books?

Sorry, had to post, haha.

I can some tell about Lynchburg employment . Some of the industries within Lynchburg include medical care, nuclear technology, pharmaceuticals, and material handling.

We live in Forest, on the western side of Lynchburg. Moved here after 30+ years in/near Baltimore, when hubby changed companies, and have been here for almost 2 years.

Right near us is Jefferson Forest High and Middle School, and Elementary school. We have neighbors who are a teacher and guidance counselor, who seem very involved with their students. Other (new) neighbors just relocated here from Boone, the "high income" part of Lynchburg for these schools. There seems to be a great network of recreational leagues, etc. for kids' activites, and I'm sure you'll be able to find what you need.

Hubby and I are empty nesters, and love how close we are to the mountains, but still have access to nice places to eat and the cool history of Lynchburg proper. We're as likely to head to Roanoke for something to do as to Charlottesville.

I think you mean Boonsboro for the high income area of Lynchburg.

Thanks for the link. I should have been more specific in my request. I am very independent, live by myself, do all my own "stuff", still drive. What I'm really wanting to know about are senior apartments for independent living, which would include low-income type apartments.
