You can find Southern small towns virtually everywhere south of Charlottesville and away from the coast. Most of the state is still Southern, but not where the wealth/jobs/people are.

Charles City and James City County have river plantations. Certain parts of Richmond have an old south look, but you won't find the same vegetation here such as palmettos, live oaks, and spanish moss. The most southern towns in VA would have to be Smithfield (this might eb a good match), Franklin, etc. Fredericksburg, too.
