I may be moving to Williamsburg in early August. Which forum is best for the "Williamsburg" area...Hampton Roads, Richmond, or Virginia (general)?

Default Gloucester - good fit for NYC resident?

I saw the referance to Gloucester and I had spoken to a co-worker whose father lives there. He said he loves it. Just wondering, I will be retiring in a couple of years so my questions are:

How is housing and property teaxes?

I am single, without children, so I would like things to do - is Gloucester primarily geared toward families with children?

Does it have a downtown area?

Would it be a big adjustment to move there from NYC - has anyone made that move?

Thank you.

Well...There is a HUGE difference between NYC and Gloucester, VA. Housing is very affordable, imo. You can go to any of the big name realtors on line and do a search. the zip there is 23062 and 23061. There are others but these are the 2 main ones. My 1700 sq ft brick ranch on an acre sold for 180,000. just 3 years ago. Taxes on that were about 1,400.00

Much of Gloucester is very rural. It is an area that is known as the Middle Peninsula and it juts out into the Chesapeake Bay and the York River. Gloucester is considered a sleeper community of the larger areas of Williamsburg, Newport News, and Hampton. It is a very different way of life than what you are used to in NYC. If you want a relaxed life and not too many amenities you might like it. It is an area I consider in my top 3 of places to return to to retire.

Ya know, I lived there for 15 years and I have to say that I don't know how to answer your family/children question. I raised my 2 sons there and I would not say that it has alot for families to do. They were involved with scouts and parks and rec and had their friends but that's about it.

I can tell you much, much more but you need to be more specific. DM me if you like.

BTW, I am from Cape May, NJ......just a point of reference for MY thoughts on Gloucester.
