More NOVA-C'ville connections due to UVA's presence.
Charlottesville is 116 miles from DC(further than Richmond) and 66 is a worse drive.

Just took a look and Frederick seems pretty interesting. Also nearby Urbana. I like the proximity to a lot of the same things that Northern VA offers - train to DC, close enough for day trips to my niece in Annandale, friends in Bowie, and Annapolis. Also have friends in Kensington, which doesn't look far.

Thanks for the suggestion!

It's a shame you only stayed in Fredericksburg. Living here is entirely different, and traffic is only a "nightmare" if you are commuting to DC. I have no trouble driving anywhere around town and live just 2 blocks off a very busy thoroughfare. However, my neighborhood is extremely quiet and laid-back. I moved here from a semi-rural area due to health concerns and love it here now. There are a lot of upscale (going by your budget) homes in the nearby areas that would be out of any higher-traffic areas, especially on the east side of town. They also would tend to have more acreage as well.

I'm sorry about your health concerns.

Yes, we would have liked to have stayed and seen the area, but were driving down with our dog when we relocated from MA to SC so only stayed one night then were back on the road.

I wish I could remember where exactly we were, all I remember was is was late afternoon, it was a large highway, and we were trying to find our hotel (a Residence Inn) which was in the parking lot of a big mall. It was just wall to wall cars. I've driven in Boston many times, but it was overwhelming to me.

I'm thinking this was the place - https://www.marriott.com/hotels/maps...redericksburg/

May I ask what town you live in?

Read the New York Post today about Cuomo undercounting the covid death rates in nursing home. So, Virginia is looking pretty darn good to me!

I have to say the most racist people and least accepting of transplants I ever meet were in Massachusetts.

There are organic foods in every supermarket across the country.

EDIT - Mass residents are really anti-New Yorkers. It's about baseball - particularly to Yankee fans whereas New Yorkers don't focus on Red Sox. Really, never heard of the Red Sox rivalry until we moved to MA. Literally, parents of my children's classmates had "F_ck the Yankees" stickers on the bumpers. Besides the swear, it's inappropriate. We were definitely unwelcomed outsiders as other New Yorkers and New Jersey transplants were.

If you aren't happy and aren't adjusting to the South, then move out of the region.
A LOT of unhappy time on someone’s hands.

I lived in Lynchburg for a decade (not anymore), and while the place have picked up drastically, I would not put it alongside Blacksburg or Roanoke. Too much confederate flag waiving, religion and the average person seems to think the Proud Boys are just stand up dudes. Now, I am not saying EVERYBODY, but a lot. A whole lot.
But anyone who would like to flag a rebel flag in their front yard, this is probably your next hometown.
You have that in Roanoke too, but not as much.

That's what we're trying to escape. I think we'll stick with Northern VA. Thx for your honesty.

I think this article says a lot about Lynchburg. (Lynchburg is an independent city, and one of the surrounding county is Campbell County)

You had asked about Richmond suburbs. I would recommend you to check out Chesterfield and Colonial Heights.

Charlottesville and Blacksburg are fairly comparable to outsiders. (I know people who live there will say I am wrong)

I would also suggest you might take a look at Winchester and Harrisonburg?
