My husband and I will be moving from New Orleans to VA in 09. He is considering a career change to teaching, since there is a high demand down here. His concern is, he's heard teaching jobs (no specific grade) are pretty competitive and a little harder to find in VA. We have been looking into Richmond, but I was wondering what areas are a good market for teachers. Thanks for any advice!

The Fredericksburg area is always building new schools, so I would assume that teachers are in demand. Between Spotsylvania and Stafford counties, there's always at least 1 whole new school opening each year.

Look in Chesterfield, Henrico, and Hanover Counties in the Richmond area. Richmond City Schools are always an option as well, albeit more challenging in some ways.

I'm a new teacher, and I just landed a job in Norfolk City Schools. VA Beach is pretty competitive I heard... I'm in the process of moving from NY to VA so when i get down there and learn more i could let you know...

The market for teachers in Loudoun County is fantastic. Since it is one of the fastest-growing counties in the nation (and the fastest-growing in Virginia), they can't build schools or hire teachers fast enough. The same holds true for Prince William, Spotsylvania, Stafford, and to a lesser extent, Fairfax counties.

Can't be more challenging than New Orleans' schools!

My husband is not yet certified, but has an MBA and BA in English, minor in History. What certification/experience is expected when applying for teaching jobs up there? I ask because down here, you don't need much. The school will pay for your certification while you are teaching w/o any prior teaching experience.

How do you like it so far? What grade do you teach? What was the beginning salary? What school district are you in?

I'm currently pursuing a BA in Education Studies and I live in NYC. As much as they pay teachers here, we would like to own a home one day and it is darn here impossible in this city.

Thanks in advance!
