My question for you all is about taxing my pension, and S.S. What state hits you the least?

Moved to VA Beach/Hampton Roads from SoCal in 2006. We wanted to live in the Southeast and visited NC and VA several times. NC was too conservative, religious and preppy for our tastes. VA had a much more live and let live attitude and the people and cities were much more cosmopolitan.....VIRGINIA won by a landslide!

There isn't much difference between the two . NC has not become a suburb of Washington DC. (yet). I find that NC and VA are very similar in climate, pace, and cost of living, The exceptions are the DC suburbs and then in parts of NC near the Triangle area are more expensive. VA has been over developed. NC does have more rural countryside in the eastern part of the state. Virginia is still rural and the gap between DC and Richmond is still there. Despite the sprawl. I think both states are amazing. Great mountain views, beaches, etc.

The Hampton Roads area has higher property taxes than coastal North Carolina. I thought the property taxes in HR were nearly what they would be in Northern Virginia. Otherwise, I agree there is not much different in climate or greography.

I have heard NC just added a new tax which has made the state less attractive for retirees. The latest trend for retirees is
South Carolina. I am interested in the Myrtle Beach area but not oceanfront property as insurance, condo fees are outrageous.
Virginia likes the property tax.

Myrtle Beach has horrible crime.

Both Carolinas are so much better than Virginia, coming from somebody who was raised in Richmond, VA.

You know, I'd agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong.
