Norfolk
Portsmouth
Virginia Beach
Chesapeake
Hampton
Newport News
Suffolk
These, I can answer, for the most part.
I'm sure Norfolk has between 30-40, which is high compared to last year (I think they had about 28 in 06, but almost 60 in 2005). Norfolk might get to 60 again. The crime is pretty much isolated in certain areas, such as Huntersville.
Newport News just hit 19 or 20, which has many worried because there were exactly that many in 2006. Thing is, at least 15 or so have been in the East End section. Newport News is actually quite nice, just watch for East End.

In VB and Chesapeake, you don't normally hear about homicides, esp. Chesapeake, and 9 times out of 10, if someone is killed it's usually domestic or the result of an argument. There are exceptions, but it's rare from what I've seen.

In most of your cities, the crime is isolated to certain sections, such as Portsmouth and Suffolk along with NN and Norfolk. And then you have cases like Chesapeake and VB.

Petersburg

My city (alexandria) has 4 homicides which does worry a few b/c our average is 5. But crime is supposed to be down.
I know Petersburg only had 4 homicides occur so far this year, and 3 of ours took place around the same time (First week of July).

I grew up outside of Chicago, IL and came to the Hampton Roads area 6 yrs ago. I laugh at people who say the crime rates here are outrageous. The stuff that happens in Chicago make these cities look like child's play.

Newport News just had its 24th homicide this past wekend....this is from our local paper:

This is the city's 24th homicide of 2007. Another person was also killed Saturday.

A lone candle marks the spot on Monday where Kashon Williams, 17, was found shot to death Saturday on the road near the corner of 41st Street and Roanoke Avenue in Newport News. (Joe Fudge, Daily Press / September 10, 2007)

We just had a murder on Sat at a Hardeez restaurant where 2 people killed a worker there during a robbery.

The crime in Newport News has already surpassed the number of murders last year.

I will agree with that. Even if you add up the homicide rates for the Seven Cities, and the outside towns (population est. 1.7 million), you might have a total of 100 murders. That's still extremely low compared to other metropolitans, i.e. Nashville, Memphis, New Orleans.

I live in a surrounding area of Richmond. Try Hanover or Henrico County. Good schools in Hanover, low crime but you can get to Richmond City in 10-15 minute commute. The West End of Henrico is a bit more pricey but lots of dining and shopping. Schools are supposedly good in the West End as well. Hanover is quiet and so are sections of Henrico...called Chamberlayne Farms or Sandston. They are little more rural but convenient to interstate as well. Chesterfield county is another. Homes prices tend to be a little cheaper there than the other areas. Good luck to you.

Your fine the only city I'm ever worried about in VA is Richmond. Everywhere else is fine. If your worried about 5 murders in the whole city of Alexandria then all I can say is wow, you've affirimed my belief that sheltered people are the norm in VA.

And that's changing thankfully... To date this year, Norfolk is outpacing Richmond, which is experiencing a 40% or so drop in homicides this year. The vast majority is concentrated in/very near government housing. The Richmond area overall is safe.
