Murders and crime in these Virginia cities? (Norfolk, Richmond: credit, neighborhood) - (VA) - Page 3 - City-Data Forum

i don't have the statistics memorized for any of these cities, but having been in VA for awhile, maybe i can shed some light on my opinions.

Norfolk - some of it is pretty gritty but no reason to go to those places. just as many nice neighborhoods with good schools. good amount of panhandlers downtown, but nothing's ever come of it.
Portsmouth - not a very pleasing city to look at, not much to do there. serves more as a ****ty neighborhood of norfolk than a city by itself. lots of crime, though there is a neighborhood here and there that's nice and quiet. last time i went to portsmouth i noticed there are A LOT of police now, which is a good thing.
Virginia Beach - not much crime at all. i lived in the green run district which is considered the "bad" area but i never felt threatened walking around alone at night. some of the residents try and live up to the reputation the city has given GR and that's the most trouble you'll get. a couple robberies here and there, the occasional homicide. there isn't much of a downtown and most of the city has a suburban feel to it.
Chesapeake - pretty quiet place. most crime happens by the norfolk border. everytime i hear of a murder it's gang related, though i don't think there's a huge gang presence there. like i said, mostly by the norfolk border.
Hampton - i don't really know much about hampton...seems to be okay. nothing really goes on here, good or band, it seems...
Newport News - downtown and the east end = reeeeal ****ty. drove around marshall st at night, lots of hookers and drug dealers. no police around ever...avoid those areas and the rest seems to be okay, though there isn't anything to do.
Suffolk - a scuzzy country town, kinda. most of its safe but there seems to be a lot of petty crime like theft and that sorta thing in certain parts.
Petersburg - not sure on the murder rate, but god is this city ugly. lots of crime otherwise, always people just hanging out on the streets causing trouble...no reason to ever be here, really.
Richmond - pretty good amount of crime. i guess murders are way down this year, i don't really hear about em much. the main problem is there are ALWAYS people panhandling, everywhere you go (except west end). i can't walk a 1/2 mile without someone asking me for money. car break ins, drugs, that sorta thing. when i'm out at night i'm always on guard but nothing has happened to me...overall i think it's an awesome city (definitely the best in va) and although there's a lot of crime around it seems to be pretty easy to avoid it.

no experience in the rest of the cities you listed. hope that helps!

Just stay on the west side of Richmond and it's fine. And very attractive.

Hey I figured out a real easy way to check the safety of an area. Check the demographics, if the black population is greater than 10%, chances are, the crime rate is abnormaly high. Spread the truth, blacks commit most of the violent crime.

richmonrebelyeller that is not true about what you saying. blacks dont commit the most violent crimes. you need to relook at your serial killers skin color. the last i knew it was a white man eating people and a white man strangling and rapeing women and i could go on and on. the things yall do makes the headlines.

Okay smart guy, explain Chesapeake's below average crime rate (30% black) and Virginia Beach being one of the safest large cities in the country (20% black)? (crickets chirping)

Well, I have to say that where I live, most of the violent crime IS committed by either blacks or hispanics. Not be racial (I myself am half black) I am being honest. Im half black and white, and i dont pull punches for either race.

However, simply looking at the percentage of a minority population is not going to give you accurate crime data.

It's not "blacks" that commit the majority of violent crimes---it's the poor, who more often than not turn to drugs or gangs and end up on the wrong side of the law trying to feed their habits. It just so happens that since a disproportionate number of African-Americans are non-college-educated that they tend to be the most vulnerable to economic recession and the most likely to be impoverished in America (i.e. Prince George's County, MD). It is NOT a "racial" issue. It is a CLASS issue.
