We are a family with 3 children (1 school age) and have been looking into possibly moving to Winchester, Va. from Fairfax County, VA. Everything we have read up to this point regarding the area has been pretty good. There is one concern, which I apologize beforehand for bringing up, and that is racial issues. Is this a major problem in this community? I've heard from hear say that it may not be a good place for us to live as it may not be very diverse. I don't want to believe that but just wanted to get other people's honest opinion. Please be frank as I am just trying to look out for my family's well being and wouldn't want to put them in an uncomfortable situation. Also, can anyone share any other helpful information about the area? Diversity? Do they have a good youth soccer program in place? How about the quality of the schools?

Thank you very much in advance for your comments.

Default I live close to Winchester

Hi, I wanted to reply to your post about moving to Winchester, Va. I live close to Winchester and you will be fine racially living there. It may not seem it, but there is some diversity around that area and they do have good soccer programs, though you have to search for them. If you need any other info, please don't hesitate to pm me.

Hello - I am also considering moving to Winchester. Did you make the move? Any racial issues with Hispanics? Any information would be valuable. Thank you.

Winchester is very uptight!!! I'd recommend Burlington, N.C. HUGE hispanic area, many resources! It is pretty, close to Greensboro too.

I've just moved to Winchester and I don't find it very uptight at all. The folks are alot friendlier than in NoVA IMO. I have family and friends from all parts of the world (Mexico, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Egypt, Ethiopia, American Indian, etc.) who visit and stay as well as people from New York and New Jersey.

Besides, the query was about Winchester not somewhere in North Carolina.

I was in the Abingdon and Bristol, Virginia area for a while and never noticed any unusual behavior from the locals. While it may not be as diverse as other areas, it certainly wasn't any problem for me. If anything, they were rather friendly and quite cordial.

However, I'm not the typical sombrero-wearing, ammunition-belt sporting type which my profile picture depicts! Perhaps I would've brought on a few stares, and a bit more attention to myself than wanted, if I was. Seriously though, everyone there just went about their business as I went about mine.
